Process Overview

Gaining a Better Understanding of the Client

Our team’s discovery process began with a lecture/meeting, where our client shared important insights on the World Geographic Atlas and goals surrounding the exhibition.

My Role through the Process

The team then conducted user research that ranged from a client interview to crafting personas to better understand users. My individual responsibilities for this project were to create wireframes, UI components and interactions that would help showcase pages from Herbert Bayer’s World Geographic Atlas in an interactive and engaging manner. I also worked on AR interactions for one section of the exhibition.

Project Overview

Topographic strives to capture the essence of Herbert Bayer’s World Geographic Atlas through our client’s goals using various immersive and interactive museum experiences, breathing life into the exhibition and making it interactive and engaging.

Services: UX Research, AR Design, Visual Design, Interaction Design, Design Systems, Prototyping

Duration: 13 weeks

Tools: Figma, Photoshop, After Effects, Adobe Aero

Opportunity Statement

The world geographic Atlas provides revolutionary data visualizations, but it is not easily accessible, nor is it highly engaging with human interaction. This product gives users the ability to experience a virtual and physical interactive exhibition to entertain, educate, and engage them to explore the World Geographic Atlas.

The Goal

Through the data visualization and following features, it was necessary to provide an understanding of the content displayed on key pages for a more engaging experience that keeps visitors entertained while still being informative and promoting the client's book.

Exhibition Features in Detail

Interview Insights

  • We need to focus more on Herbert Bayer the author and less on the Atlas.

  • It is enssential to craft our themes to relate more to the client's original themes.

  • Multiple audiences needs to be able to understand our exhibition.

  • We need to focus on the creative process and Bayer's story.

  • It is important to include scientific information and relate it to design.

  • Include storytelling by multimedia display and showing interesting graphics rather than history and science.

Define: User Persona

Our interview insights led us to craft personas to understand the type of users that would attend the exhibitions. This process helped us evolve our goals from the defining stage.

Pitching the Design to Client

Presenting Goals and Features

During this phase, our team presented our pitch to the client by going into detail of the client's goals, our research, and exibition features. With approval, we began ideating and designing for the exhibition.

Multimedia Storytelling

Mapping the History of Herbert Bayer

Our motion team worked on creating a short documentary in Adobe After Effects going through the key points and features presented in the World Geographic Atlas. My team did not directly work on this documentary. However, we did give feedback to the motion team to further improve its quality.

System Design and User Interface through Data Visualization

After many sketches and high fidelity variation, my team developed a final high-fidelity prototype with a design system to showcase six selected pages from the World Geographic Atlas (I worked on the final two pages). This data visualization incorperates buttons, animations, and icon signals to make each page interactive. The final prototype was displayed on a touchcreen.

Augmented Reality Planet Poster

Combining Physical and Virtual Experiences

A team member and I worked on an interactive poster using augmented reality to showcase information from the physical World Geographic Atlas planet poster. My tasks were to design movement interactions in relation to the solar system animation that I animated shown in the AR experience.

Project Reflection

What I learned

Through this project, I learned how to manage time and work within a team in a timely manner through researching and developing usable prototypes. I also learned how to pitch a design idea to a client and the importance of utilizing feedback and critiques for valuable and functional user interfaces and interaction design.

Challenges

  • Promoting a book for a client through an interactive exhibition was challenging, but having the book apart of the exibition along with interactive media made this goal easier.

  • Working on data visualization in a team was challenging. However, incorperating a design system and reusable UI components made the process smoother.
